NRNA-Finland has selected following projects for 2011-2013
1. SUPPORT for HANDICAPPED people
2. JATROPHA and ALEOVERA FARMING
1. Support for Handicapped students
Objective:
The fact of human right for each and every individual despite of their born disabilities cannot be denied. We, the people, are responsible for maintaining prosperity and equilibrium society.
"Handicapped child care home” (Apanga Bal Awas Griha) based on Phungling - 4, Taplejung, Mechi, Nepal helps those children deprived of their hearing and speaking disability to encourage and guide them towards better social and educative life. This institution possesses a primary home and a coordinator who has been teaching handicapped students through sign language. Until now, there have been 32 of these children ranging from the age of 10 – 19 years old. The organization is funded by the government of Nepal.
The funding of the government is 1000 Rs. for an individual per month. Despite the funding, it is not nearly enough for them to sustain healthy life guiding them towards an educative path. Hence, the organization has been maintaining and doing its best to guide the children by letting couple of them stay at the coordinator’s house. The building provided by government is not sufficiently adjusted for them.
The main objective of presenting support idea to NRNA Finland is to convert their minimum amount of knowledge into practical effect of their life where they could be able to fit into society. Running a project for those children, with the help of their communicable assistance, will be generating a bit of income for supporting their needs later in future.
As Taplejung, happens to be in the far eastern part of Nepal and has recently turned into a municipality, business prospective has started to engrave its path. It would be very flexible and income generating for them if they would be taught with “home-made product and carpenter skills” depending upon their age. It is not very wise to let 10 -14 years old children use heavy equipment, keeping in mind about the difficultness of teaching them through sign language. Carpenter skills are a very basic and fruitful idea for children above 15, where other small home-made products with local raw materials could be included. These skills, in long prospective, could be a life-long income generating skill for them and will widen the area of their communication with social activities.
Activities:
The first and foremost way to start would be to provide them with a small training place which could be their primary building. Following points will provide detailed instructions in adjusting activities:
1.To find a location for training. This in return will decrease the cost of their training and provide easiness and comfort for them to train.
2.Employing a local carpenter who also posses skills in hand-crafts with minimum salary for a couple of hours of training. Assistance will be provided by the coordinator for translating sign language to the children.
3.Providing them with general equipment required for carpenter or home-made products training.
4.Providing them with resources for the training.
5.A sound environment for the children and not forcing them to be involved in activities where they have difficulty.
6.Updating local media about their training, which will in future provide stronghold for their skills and products.
7.Upgrading them into public exhibitions about their home-made products and their abilities.
Resources:
Financial resource is the most-important part where NRNA could play its vital role. Willingness of NRNA to support this project is first priority where the amount to provide for this project could be discussed with the members keeping flexibility of available local resources.
Initial assumption of 500 euros – 1000 euros to start up the project with running time around 1 - 2 month could be assumed. 4-6 months of their training period should be enough for them to start up with their skills despite lagging in communication with handicapped children.
The precise amount of financial assistance is to be discussed further with NRNA members to ensure the smoothness in the project.
Outputs:
General outputs of the project can be assumed in a very practical way where children will be able to support themselves with income generating skill.Following points could be summarized as their important output matters:
1.Technically able with their skills of carpenter of home-made products.
2.Socially able for standing up by themselves and achieve status in society which is a vital part in their social life.
3.Economically able for making income even if it is for low-income generating products.
4.Educative advancement in understanding sign language, which will increase their area of understanding through sign language.
5.Enhancement in their creating abilities.
Management Structure:
The responsibility of managing the financial and educative structure for them has been done by their coordinator. The structure will possess 3 people in task. A coordinator (i.e teacher and care-taker), an employee for helping the coordinator to manage the activities and a trainer (local carpenter with diversified skills for home-made products).
Measurement of the project:
The length and extension of the project could be measured according to achievement and effectiveness of the project. Trail period of 1-2 months will describe the practical effect of the project. Extending time further to trail period could be assumed to be 3-4 months depending on the discussion with NRNA members and viewing the impact of the project.
Ultimate success in the achievement of the project will be viewed on the applicability of the skills in practical life. Running a small effective business by children under assistance of the coordinator will be the ultimate success.
Targeted outcome and sustainability of the Project:
The expected outcome of the projectin what handicapped children could achieve and the planned way of sustaining the project further for future in benefit of other similar children are summarized as:
1st month:
1.Inauguration of the project actively in VDC level.
2.Learning of the technique in tailoring.
3.Being socially active after participating in programs organized by “BalApangaAwasGriha” in co-ordination with various VDC bodies.
4.Awareness to the public through local media rapidly.
2nd, 3rd and 4th month:
1.Learning the technique of tailoring.
2.Handicapped children at this phase are expected to have general skills with ability of making basic products.
3.As the active media will be informing the locals rapidly, they are expected to do small projects for local people.
4.For the projects that are to be made for local people, there will be some amount of commission for” ApangaBalAwasGriha” in order to maintain the project further for other handicapped children. The amount of commission through each project is to be discussed further with Head of Local Bodies and NRNA Finland in order to preserve child right.
5th 6th and 7th month:
1.Diversified and intense technique of tailoring.
2.More public awareness through media and cultural programs are expected to provide them with more local project opportunities.
3.In the similar ratio of sustaining the project “ApangaBalAwasGriha” is expected to get stronger in financial growth.
4.By the end of 7th month Handicapped children are expected to be profound in tailoring technique and be able individually to develop products locally.
8th and 9th month:
1.Most critical time of handicapped children to start their profession individually.
2.Still will be learning intensified technique of tailoring and are expected to be professional in products that they are taught with.
3.By the end of 9th month they will have experience in making projects for the local people and will be profound with the tailoring technique.
4.Various products made by children will be out for sale through various programs organized by “ApangaBalAwasGriha” locally.
5.“ApangaBalAwasGriha” will start to enhance local tailors for providing the handicapped children with more opportunities.
After 9th month:
1.Handicapped children will be provided with a common place and a translator to start off their business with commissioned money.
2.“ApangaBalAwasGriha” will enforce commission system through the revenues of the product.
3.3 months of work experience will require them to be profound and 3 months for “ApangaBalAwasGriha” to gather commission to start over with another set of 9 months of training to other Handicapped children.
4.As per condition after 3 months trained handicapped children will be able to teach their fellow students, where extra trainer and care-taker will be reduced depending upon the condition.
5.The timing of the training and their work will be regulated to maintain flexibility as there will be shortage of machines during Initial years (1-4) of the project.
6.After 3 months of work experience, trained handicapped children could work in regulation of “ApangaBalAwasGriha” or could start their own business according to their will.
7.In case of rapid increasing handicapped students, need of extra places, equipments, will be managed through these cycle of training and trained ones.
Environmental and Health Issue:
Plastic products are carelessly scattered in most cases as there is no any system of recycling in Taplejung district. Those scattered plastics could be used in making dolls or home-use products with a bit of skill. Hence, providing handicapped students with these skills could result in environmental cleanliness and small income generating profession. This could be possible future area where their skill could be widened to.
Working with naturally produced fibers like leaf of chiraito, in order to produce clothing products could help them to engrave a positive impact in health issue whereas advantage in environmental factor.
Products market strategy:
Market strategy of products generated through skilled handicapped students plays vital role in sustaining the project further in future and sustaining handicapped students by generating income through their skills. Although due to an effective tailoring skills which results in immediate output, a planned and co-operative strategy for distributing their products will be key to their and the project’s success as well. Co-operation with government and non-government bodies including with public awareness is the most important factor in prospect of their product’s future. Following points visualizes in maintaining the market flow of products generated through skilled handicapped students:
1.Co-operation with local NGOs and government bodies:
These section describes huge amount of local government bodies and local NGOs available in Taplejung district. Each and every of possible bodies has to be made aware with the project of training handicapped students. Various functions and events organized by various organizations is a prime option in informing about the products and the skills of handicapped students. Government authorities, NGOs and even local events organized by schools and communitiesare to be actively participated, where people from different sectors could be aware with the project and products. These definitely will play vital role in support of the products and for future of handicapped students.
2.Media co-operation:
Media has been playing vital role in distributing information to mass public. Local Newspaper, Local FM radio and Local TV channel are to be activated in order to distribute the information of products and progress of the project. A multi co-operation with media sector will be healthy humanitarian work for media to perform and an effective path for the products to reach to local people. Information about different events that are related to the project and products is to be announced through these media which in return will generate public awareness.
Viewing at the progress of project, national and international mediaare in future plan.
3.Local shop co-operation:
Products of clothing are the ultimate products that could reach public via local shop. Couple of shop in bazar could also co-operate so that the products could sell through their shop with the name of handicapped students. In return, these shops could be provided with certain revenue of the selling price. Clothing stores will be main target in this sector.
4.Own production store:
Fulfilling the demand of customers through own production store under“ApangaBalAwasGriha” will be an effective way to produce and supply to local customers. Customer desire varies according to their need so they could co-ordinate directly with skilled handicapped students for the desires they wish. This will be an effective way for success of implementation of skill to local market.
5.Door to door campaign:
Providing the information as well as small scale of product via door to door campaign with the support of local bodies will generate mass public interests. Goal of door to door campaign will be in sharing idea about the project for future relevance.
6.Local events:
Ranging from various small local events to large national events held are to be actively participated. Small programs organized by “ApangaBalAwasGriha” will be vital in relying information to public with generation of awareness in higher government bodies.
A planned co-operative market strategy will help handicapped students to stand out in society for themselves. ApangaBalAwasGriha has to maintain these co-operation along with providing skillful training in order to help these children to be skilled manpower despite the primary level of teaching being performed meanwhile.
2. Jatropha and Aleovera Farming
Subject Area:
Income generation, Organic farming, and environmentprotection
Project Strategy:
This project is related with millennium development goal (2015) no 1, 6 and 7 and also with poverty alleviation through self-employment, community development and empowerment. The following strategy will be adopted to achieve those goals.
Cost sharing among donors, community, VDC and Community forest,
Participation of marginalized and most disadvantaged group (MDAG) in decision making level will be ensured (At least law of Nepal Government)
Positive discrimination; The MDAG household (HHs) will be supported in large scale rather than other rich people in financial, technical and other of investment. But benefit will be distributed equally.
AAFNAI KAM, AAFNAI MAM-The users of community forest will participate in planting and others work as labor.
Upland farmers are organized into a Cooperative to undertake Jatrophaand Aleovera farming. They use their and community forest lands and also provide labor. For this purpose, each farmer- member will be individually and jointly work as a member of the Cooperative under community forest. The Memorandum of Agreement will be made between poor people and rich people for investment and benefit distribution.
Aleovera will be farmed in individual land and Jatropha will be farmed in community forest. Only those people who are the member of community forest will be the target group of the project.
Coordination and Cooperation: to make successful project cooperation and coordination will be done with District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), District Land Protection Office, District Forest Office (DFO), District Develop Committee (DDC), Village Development Committee (VDC) and Dhading Chamber, Commerce and Industry.
Capacity Development and knowledge
management: Capacity development of users in different activities and knowledge
management will be considered as essential elements in the program.
Problem/issue that project is addressing:
Dhading is adjoining district with capital city Kathmandu of Nepal. But it is very back in development. Nepal has 0.452 indicators as Gender Development andDhading has 0.394. Likewise; in Human Development Indicator (HDI) of Nepal is 0.471 and Dhading has 0.410. The poverty indicator of Nepal is 47.7 and Dhading has 39.6.
So poverty and gender development position
is poor. To address these problems economic development in meaningful
participation of women program can be milestone. Condition of Maidi VDC people
is same as Dhading district. More over this project will address to reduce the
effect of climate change and environment protection, alternative energy, gender
development and use of unused land.
Project Objective:
Provide sustainable livelihood to people to improve their quality of life; and empower them by providing opportunities i.e. self-employment to grow economically, intellectually and physically healthy to become truly free from social bondage.
Minimize the effect of climate change and environment protection through Jatropha farming,
Provide alternative, renewable and clean source of energy to minimize dependence from oil importation.
Project competences and innovativeness:
This project is innovative in the sense of
Low cost investment and high production using waste land and personnel land
Easy to Implement
Replicable
Less resources and labor
Use of free and unused land
Market guarantee of the production
Project Area and beneficiaries:
This program will be held on GuamelzdeTantale Community Forest, Maidi VDC located on south west VDC of Dhading district.Project Duration:
First phase of this project will be of two years. This will be continuing after the support from NRNA- Finland.Project Implementation plan:
-Targeted people: Local Community or residence
-Priority group: Marginalized and most disadvantaged group (MDAG)
-Total Budget: 390 Thousand
-Expected budget from NRN-Finland: 300 Thousand
-Community investment: 90 Thousand
-Resource organization: COSOC-Nepal
Planning Area:
The planting will be two types of area according to ownership a) land of communityforest b) upland of individual households. Land of community forest will be used for Jatropha farming and individual household land will be used for Aleovera farming. Around 35ropani land will be covered for Jatropha farming. And around 55 ropani of individual land will be used for Aleovera farming.
Training for motivation:One day training will be provided for the community people about the advantage and benefit of the Jatropha farming from resource person of COSOC-Nepal
Training for Nursery:
Training for planting caring of nursery will be provided from technical person. COSOC-NEPAL will be responsible for providing the person.
Nursery and Plantation:
Nursery will be made selecting particular area according to the advice and suggestion of export. Nursery of Jatropha will be made selecting some area community forest and Aleovera to individual households.Aleovera plant will not be enough to provide all household at the same time. 50 percent house hold will be selected for initial nursery of the plant. Those household should contribute equal amount of plant to rest of households. Two or more plant used to come out around 4/5 months. So each household will get Aleovera plant with a year.
Conservation of plantation area:
Aleovera plantation will be their own land so household will be motivated to conserve it. It is a plant which gives money so motivation will automatically comes over it. Conservation of Jatropha plant will be covered byfierce surrounding it. Each household will be responsible contribute their labor for it. Some material stuff will be bearded from the budget.
Monitoring:
Monitoring committee will be active all the time reporting status of the plant. They will inform to donor organization NRNA-Finland and resources organization COSOC-Nepal. Most of administrative task will be done by admin committee. One of major part of project cost is administrative cost but in this project, we will try to reduce administrative cost by voluntarily doing those jobs via monitoring committee.
Marketing and selling:
Though Aleovera will be grown by individual household. Marketing and selling will be done via same pipeline. Aleovera consumer committee will collect all Aleovera in one location and sell it at once but benefit will be shared according to their ratios of production. Selling and marketing of Jatropha is the responsibility of Jatropha consumer committee. For searching markets and further assistance COSOC-Nepal will be together with them and itwill alsoassist further study about probable refinement of product from which community people can be benefited more.
Sustainability of the project:
Once Jatrophastarted to give its product, it will be continuing up to 25 to 50 years. And Aleovera can give its product up to five years. For planting, growing and caring, farmersthemselves will be involved so they will feel it as their own property. Once these plants start to give its product, this product will be continued by the society it itself. Consumer committee is the most important organization. This organization will be responsible for managing income and expenditure.
-Investment of community
-Establishment of maintenance fund
-Regular monitoring from donor organization
-This type of program is already started by VDC so it can be continued taking support from them
-Once Jatropha andAleovera are planted, they will start to give its income from small expenses.
-It’s getting priority around the world for organic farming and prevention of environmental change so this -kind of project can get further support from different donor organizations.
-Market is guaranteed for the raw product as well. It is also possible to refine it locally and get more profit margins.

Jiba Lamichanne unanimously elected NRNA Prez
The fifth Non Resident Nepali (NRN) Global Conference continued its past tradition by unanimously electing Jiba Lamichanne as the new president of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) on Friday.
Another contender Dev Man Hirachan withdrew his candidacy at the wee hours today after intense pressure and request from all the quaters, leaving the only contender Lamichanne vying for the post.
Hirachan said he took back the candidacy for the welfare and unity of the NRNA as the Thursday’s event came out in an exaggerated manner. He also reckoned that the consensus sought in the NRN could give some positive message to the political parties as well.
Following the victory, Lamichanne said, the election has once again given the message of unity to all. He said he would maintain unity to gain the objective of the NRN.
“There were no differences among us. We were together, we are together and we will be together,” Lamichanne said. Other vacant post in the NRN would now be filled by elections.
